Photoshoot - in the can!

On this Sunday just past, we bunkered down at Sun Studios in Alexandria to shoot our latest - and very soon to be released - collection p a p e r h e a r t s. The weather mattered not for a change (hurrah! As it rained on and off for most of the morning!) and we all cruised through the day to an odd-ball collection of jazz and hula music on our portable record player.

We had some splendid people at our disposal helping make everything possible, so our warmest and most thankful wishes are extended to:

The incredibly patient and talented Lyndal Irons (our resident photographer - we simply won't shoot without her!)...her ability to re-create the specific ideas we have in our heads is phenomenal!

For the first time we were joined by the spectacularly skilled hands of hair and make-up artist extraordinaire Tania Bowers. Victory rolls, porcelain skin and a cheeky pout - I think you'll all agree the results speak for themselves!

And lastly but certainly never least, our beautiful bombshell of a model; Gabrielle Dillon. Her quirky sense of humour added that crucial joie de vivre to every shot.

Vintage Evan-Picone - a shopping guide

We happened across fashion label Evan-Picone somewhat by chance whilst trawling through vintage espadrilles on Etsy (Summer is coming and, as always, we are on the search for the yet-to-be-discovered *perfect* espadrille...).
We were struck by the delightfully feminine structure of the vintage shoes created by this label; how we love a practical yet deliciously low-heeled shoe!
And oh, how we wish we had little dainty vintage sized feet that would neatly fit into any of these shoes...

Evan-Picone was founded in 1949 by friends Charles Evans and Joseph Picone. Their first range was a small yet successful run of skirts designed by Evans and produced by Picone which was followed by a range of ladies pants.

By the 1960s they were a leading manufacturer of Sportswear (ha! I suppose you *can* jog in a low heel...), but has since been sold to the Jones Apparel Group and has faded into obscurity/mediocrity somewhat. And as an odd little bit of trivia, you may be interested to know that Evan-Picone provided the wardrobe for Mary Tyler Moore in her eponymous show in the 1970s!

For the Love of...Amy Merrick

Recently we discovered An Apple a Day, the delightful blog of New York based floral designer Amy Merrick. And boy oh boy, didn't we just gasp!

From the rural musings told from her family's ancient and wonderfully ramshackle summer house Elmwood in New Hampshire...

Designed by her descendants, still owned and used by her family today

...to the city-bound observations from the everyday....

Oh how I wish we had a local beach like this where we could just pop down and gather some amazing sea-roughed glassware!

colours, designs...I don't even know where to start with this!

Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and a FIELD of bluebells. And we all know how I like these!

She even has foxgloves growing on her fire escape..too much!!

...to her boundless talent with making pretty flowers and greenery look even prettier!

Her obvious talent dovetails neatly into the open and thoughtful tone of her blog. We spent hours meandering - and gasping - through the archives discovering new plants we didn't even know we loved and places we've never been.

And we highly recommend you do the same!

As soon as we get a few days in a row over 20 degrees we all go a bit spare grasping for summer don't we! It certainly inspired us here at G&J HQ.

Rather than hugging the heater, I set out into the sun and gallivanted about the streets on the look out for early blooming spring flowers...

and yep, the tweed outfit I wore was not dissimilar to this really!

When I got home, and over a cup of water spiked with a dash of rosewater and lemon (try it - it's delicious!)

...there was a flourish of thoughts for the summer collection...

{ Think floral, think teeny tiny details, think bright colours, think stripes }

Our quick and restless fingers are already putting together some rather glorious samples!

Runway Report Omnibus - Resort 2012

Oh yes, Resort collections are probably my favourite examples of fancy wearable fashion.
Some of my absolute favourites from this years Resort collections...

Christopher Kane

Probably a wee bit too much technicolour for me overall, but this little number is super snazzy in silver and lime.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Lots of lovely lush fabrics and draping here. I'm particularly fond of this blue and white pattern and the silhouette is fabulously classic.

Marc Jacobs

Some eclectic stuff, and a bit too pattern-y for me overall, but the gentle juxtaposition of casual and cocktail is quite lovely.

Louis Vuitton

Gorgeous cut-work on the fabrics and the woven patterns are quite spectaculor.

Lanvin

A bit of a mess of tribal textures at times (ha! not evident below however), but overall floaty and wonderful. The button up the side detail on the one-piece is a thoughtful touch.

Burberry Prorsum

Yes, there are a few too many 'beads' hanging off things for my tastes, but Oh my. The textures, patterned fabric and cuts of these are pretty damn fabulous. Not to mention the woven accessories! The block colour combinations are really smart and the tailored leather trench coats in brights rather than the traditional nudes are divine.

Valentino

Yep, I loved all of this utterly adorable floaty stuff from Valentino! What fabulous fabrics and details. The 1930s inspired capped sleeved lace dresses are just divine. And I am ignoring the fur and focusing on the fabulous cut of that denim jumpsuit.
Note the hilarious gait from the models!

Yves Saint Laurent

And I've saved the very best until last! Bright primary colours, wonderfully feminine cuts...honestly, what's not to absolutely l.o.v.e about all of this?! Adoring the playsuits and the puffed sleeve details.

I'll have one of each, thank you.

Clearly I am putting my money on Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry Prorsum and Valentino. You should all have a closer look through those collections - lots of amazingness to soak in.

Trends? Woven everything, Primary colours / BLUE, applique, denim denim denim, late 1930s era silhouettes

Winter Finders Keepers Markets Wrap-up

Phew, another splendid markets from the lovely ladies at The Finders Keepers has been put to bed for another six months!

It was, as always, quite a blur and flurry of lovely shoppers. Thanks to all of you who popped past and said hello and even purchased a few things - if I was too swamped in a swathe of people to get to you, I apologise!

Our stall was quite the autumnal wonderland thanks to some splendid tinkering from the delicious Kiki from The Flower Store...

For all you trainspotters, that's a very old paperback edition of Anne of Green Gables which we have open!

Lyndal Irons - Our favourite photographer has an exhibition!

Followers of Ginny & Jude fashions will be very familiar with the work of Lyndal Irons - she has shot our past three collections and even the opening to our pop-up shop at Gaffa Gallery last year. As we at G&J are rather ridiculous perfectionists, you can be certain that we think Lyndal's skills behind the lens are second to none.

And, naturally, her talents extend far further than the realms of fashion, and we invite all of you to join us in celebrating her new exhibition 'Parramatta Road' opening this Wednesday June 1st at Global Gallery in Paddington.

We all know and love / loathe the great throbbing artery of traffic which is Parramatta Road. In various states of decay and decadence it hosts a curious mix of pompous bridal shops, ghostly long disused shopfronts and the ever ubiquitous caryards. In Lyndal's eyes, "they form a living museum of greater Sydney: its affluence, issues and heritage. Few brave the smog to discover the road’s treasures". And this exhibition documents street scenes and businesses to preserve an important place perpetually threatened by change.

Certainly what we have been privileged enough to see so far has been rather spectacularly moving, so we can only hope for what this final cut will hold!

Come into my studio with Creative Spaces for The Finders Keepers

I was recently asked to be part of a project The Finders Keepers are working on where they have a gander around the homes and Creative Spaces of Australian independent designers...of course I said 'yes!' - I am as guilty as anyone of being rather partial to peeking into other peoples lives!

On a recent Sunday afternoon the delight that is Renee Baker popped over to take some photographs of my large loungeroom in which all and everything I have ever made has sprung from. In fact, I have been using this beautiful space for so long, I can hardly imagine what it would be like to divorce my 'home' life from my 'studio' life! I'm sure it would make it very much harder to spend hours knitting together these Knitted Knickers and the like without the constant interest/distraction of myriad costume dramas and cups of tea...

Once the business part of the visit was over, we had a good natter over a cup of coffee and some freshly baked Coffee Crumble Cake (could not be recommended highly enough - a never-fail cake if I ever baked one!).

It was an absolute peach of an afternoon!

Fashion History - Edwardian

Having recently watched the absolutely beautiful Downton Abbey (BBC, but coming soon to a television set near you!) I was reminded of my love for late Edwardian fashion.
Also know as the Belle Epoque, this era lasted from the very late 1800s up until World War I and was loosely categorised by it's teeny-tiny hand-span waists and puffed 'mutton chop' sleeves.
I think the period which I find the most beautiful and fascinating stretched just beyond this, loosely contained in the 10 years between 1908 and 1918.

Upheaval was rife in all areas of life - industrialisation was well under way and modernisation inevitable, women were poised to get the vote, gone was the bustle and the s-bend corset (awful!) and for women sillouhettes had become more true-to-life.

Clothing had a playfulness about it and a sense of practicality in the flattering draping. Colours were cleverly matched in a cacophony of muted and rich hues and softer fabrics were favoured.

As for hats; gone were the heavily embellished, wide brims of the late 1800s. These essential accessories were smaller in size, but heavy on the decoration; feathers, birds, flowers and ribbon were all used to great effect. In fact, many of the more outlandish feather trims I have restored to use in my pieces were made in this period!

Ah yes, the delicious Downton Abbey. Set in 1912 and concluding just as the War has been declared (although a 2nd season is being filmed as I type!) it is truly an aesthetic delight.

In fact, beyond the odd spot of meddling and brief love affairs, the women of the house seem to do little more each day than get dressed several times!

If there's one fabric we've particular affection for, it's tweed. And with Winter slowly creeping upon us (and with all the rain, it certainly feels like tweed weather!) it's time to pay homage to this amazing fabric.

Runway Report - Carven

We were super delighted to come across the cute and quirky Parisian brand Carven whilst out meandering in the wilds of the internet recently.

The brand was founded by the formidable Carmen de Tomasso aka Madame Carven in 1945 in the burgeoning post-war fashion years just before the 'New Look' would take off in 1947, (yes, our favourite fashion period) with the rather noble idea of style over ostentation.

A complete novice to fashion and decidedly removed from the rarefied world of Haute Couture, Madame Carven sought to produce beautiful, interesting clothes for young people; to "offer accessible luxury and to capture the spirit of the moment through her simple and refined designs".

The fashion house remains at it's original location at Rond Point des Champs today.

Madame Carven stopped designing for the company at 84 and amazingly will celebrate her 102nd birthday this year!

Here at Ginny & Jude we always feel a little strange on this worldwide day of love. Mostly because we feel this day of fearless declarations, romance and heartfelt risk-taking has lost it's way a little in modern times.

Today we thought we would take a journey back to when on Valentine's Day romantic gestures were overwhelming tomes of love unbridled:

This beautiful Danish Valentine dating back to 1820 has been painstakingly designed using pin-pricks.

From the early 1800s, this star shape - folded from a square piece of paper - was a popular style for Valentine cards. The colours on this are particularly beautiful. It says:

1 \ My Dearest Dear and blest divine \ I’ve pictured here your heart and mine.
2 \ But Cupid with her Cruel dart \ Has deeply pierced my tender heart
3 \ And has between us set Across \ Which makes me to lament my loss

Oh, it's been a busy month! We have hardly stopped - and hence we are *rather* behind in attending to our lovely twoshoes blog.

Firstly, our pop-up shop as part of The Finders Keepers and Gaffa Gallery's Arcade Project is about to close! It has been open for almost a month now and the whole lovely little cosy spot is to be packed up this Monday, so your time is running out to grab yourself something delightful! Yesterday we flung open the doors to our new pop-up shop!

We have decked it out in all our lovely pieces and thought we'd share a few quick snaps with you all before the official launch next Thursday...

A special thanks to James from Re-Creations who kindly lent us the absolutely stunning mirror and shelving. It's a perfect match for every other piece of decor and does the space a world of favours! Both are also for sale...

And to Stacey from Busy Bee Garden Service for lending us the picturesque plants and succulents. She very sweetly has faith that I won't kill them!

And what are hat's without hatstands? When displayed: not very much at all. Arjuna from Mandali Guitars kindly took a moment from many far more important projects to whip up a number of beautiful tall and sturdy hat stands for us. We love them!

From September 21st until October 27th, we will construct an intimate millinery salon inside Sydney city’s Gaffa Gallery as part of their Arcade Project, an initiative run in collaboration with The Finders Keepers.

Showcasing headpieces and fascinators from previous collections ‘Buttermilk Sky’ (Spring / Summer 2009) and ‘Harlequin’ (Autumn / Winter 2010), visitors to the shop will get the first sneaky peek at the Ginny & Jude Designs Spring / Summer 2010 collection; ‘Razzle Dazzle Rose’.
Inspired by country lanes, meadows at dusk and lazy afternoons in the orchard, ‘Razzle Dazzle Rose’ is an unabashedly romantic ode to summer. Delicate feathers and antique silk and paper blooms evoke the mischief and revelry of times past.
To complete this selection of headwear, a collection of one-off millinery pieces designed and handmade specifically for Spring Racing Carnival Season will be available for a strictly limited time.

To pop the cork on this residency, Gaffa Gallery and The Finders Keepers will host a launch party on Thursday 30th September from 6pm-9pm.

Well, it sure was cold!

In Winterland, that is!

We didn't skate, but we sure shivered in the icy chill that was Winterland at Carriageworks!

By day...

A large notion of thanks goes out to the girls who were in our stall in week One (we believe it was Mechelle and Anny, they of Little Book of Bearded Chaps fame which I wrote about previously..) who kindly left their large white paper pom-poms strung up and helped make our stall look terrific!

...and by night

The vintage kimonos were snapped up in a flash! By pack-up time on Saturday night we had only three left of the twenty we brought to market with us...did you manage to get one?

This one - a 1930s rayon 'juban' (which is to be worn underneath a kimono!), $80 - was one of our very favourites and somehow was one of the three left...we're almost delighted that we get to keep it!! However, if you are interested, send us an email and we will send you all the particulars!

We are expecting another shipment of Kimonos, Haoris and Obis from Japan over the next few weeks, which will all be listed in Ginny & Jude's Emporium, so stay tuned...

WINTERLAND!! Get your skates on...

Carriageworks + skating + markets = WINTERLAND!

Truth be told, we at Ginny & Jude are not very adept skaters. In fact, we are more likely to be clutching to the edge for dear life rather than daintily twirling across the ice with ease.
But that's by the by, because there's a LOT more to Winterland than an ice-rink.
From clothes to fairyfloss, flowers to antiques - there's an eclectic array of items for sale at the carefully curated markets which sit just alongside the ice.
And with stalls on rotation there's different products on show every week!
Week Three - July 22-24 - promises to be quite fabulous.
We are absolutely thrilled to be flinging open our cupboards of collectibles and releasing some of our treasured collection of textiles and antiquities to the public.
Beautiful kimonos and obis dating back to the 1920s will hang aside delightful clothes from the 1950s-60s; bundles of vintage fabrics and cute little colour coded button cards are sure to inspire.
All of these pieces will complement our complete range of warm winter hand-knitted accessories, jewellery and a selection of headpieces.

By gee and gosh, we have been ever so busy...
A few weeks back we jetted up the highway in our beautiful powder green 1972 Toyota Corona Jackie to do the Finders Keepers markets in Brisbane.

What a beautiful site the Old Museum is - with tiered manicured gardens and a balcony, we were quite besotted by it. The weather remained a balmy 20 degrees for both days and as the sun shone brightly and we realised there was no need for wearing a cardigan let alone a coat, we couldn't help but smile broadly!

We had a thoroughly lovely time chatting to all the lovely Brisbane people who visited our stall...

And felt very happy indeed to have the delightful ladies from Leeloo

AND Bespoke Letterpress

next door to have a giggle with in the moments of down time...

Not to mention regular lovely visits from our friends (and fellow stall holders) from

Sanoii and Six

AND Brooke Johnston Designs

All us lucky folk in Studio One were serenaded by an elusive busking DJ (who in actual fact is Sydney-based deejay and broadcaster Jack Shit) who spun his amazing collection of antique 78rpm records and kept us all feeling gorgeous and lively each day...

We had a swell time at the Finders Keepers Winter markets at Carriageworks. A few ranges SOLD OUT, so we have been frantically working to replenish the stocks!

Oooh, we couldn't be more excited - here at Ginny & Jude HQ we can barely contain our bouyant delight at being able to finally share with you the Harlequin Collection!
The thwarted circular romances of Harlequin and Columbine, Pierrot and Pierrette provided us with a frivolous and theatrical backdrop for a stunning new range of knits, jewellery and headwear.
We stuck to a colour palette of stark contrasts and monochrome in hand-knitted mohair, semi-precious stones, pearls, dyed straw and quills together with some lovingly restored vintage pieces.

Shot on location at the Old Rectory in Ashfield, we enlisted the talents of local photographer Lyndal Irons to ensure everything looked amazing.

With her talents behind the lens and the natural beauty of our model, I really struggled with the selection process, but below are what I consider to be the real gems of the shoot.

Anthropologie..now open to Australians!

I first learnt about the beautiful American concept store Anthropologie via Pia Jane Bijkirk's blog last October (click through and revel in the prettiness!). They had opened a branch in London - their first outside of the USA - and the photos of the interior; the goods, the displays - everything was outrageously perfect.

From the thrillingly delicate window dressing made from a series of dyed tea-bags (!) to the floor to ceiling plant wall, it was a world I desperately wanted to inhabit.

I may not be able to jet over to London anytime soon and wander haplessly through the shop itself, but having just found out Australian's can now shop in their online store is just as wonderful!

With all the sticky Sydney humidity and unrelenting heat, it can be hard to cast your mind into the cool shade of Autumn and Winter. Yet, at Ginny & Jude HQ we have been lolling in the delicious shade of our Autumn / Winter collection for 2010.
